What is the core of CrossFit based on?

CrossFit's methodology is rooted in the definition of fitness, resulting in measurable and reproducible outcomes. These universal principles and definitions allow for accessibility to athletes and coaches alike. CrossFit's core concept is the stimulus of constantly varied functional movement executed at high intensity. This combination leads to increased work capacity across various domains and is the pursuit of fitness and health. Elements of stimulus and adaptation form the foundation of the CrossFit methodology. Each element has been precisely and comprehensively defined in quantifiable terms, from work capacity to fitness to health, a contribution previously unknown in the fitness industry.

The foundation of the CrossFit methodology is comprised of essential elements that we refer to as CrossFit's DNA or the L1 kernel. In computer science, a "kernel" is the core components of an operating system that provides a platform for software to be created specific to that kernel, and is a universal interface for different users to access software running on the computer. Similarly, the CrossFit kernel is the fundamental knowledge that makes CrossFit work for diverse individuals in various contexts. The kernel encompasses the stimulus and adaptation components that enable the CrossFit methodology to deliver observable, measurable, and repeatable outcomes. It is the scientific bedrock and explanation for the entire program.

How do we put this into practice?

The elements that form the foundation of CrossFit's methodology, known as "the kernel," represent the core of what CrossFit is and what it strives to achieve, serving as a guiding principle for the program. Moreover, the kernel not only informs what we do, but how we do it. It provides objective definitions and methods that trainers can utilize in their practice, including variance in programming, the mechanics-consistency-intensity charter, threshold training and technique, our nutrition recommendations, scaling, virtuosity in coaching, and more.

What is the backbone of CrossFit?

CrossFit's athletic development involves constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity. Nutrition forms the base of the Theoretical Hierarchy of Development, followed by safe, natural functional movements. Adherence to CrossFit's methodology leads to increased power output, and emphasis is placed on technique, mechanics, consistency, and proficiency of movement before increasing intensity.
